Leadership is not about position, designation, or authority. It is about the ability to influence people and channel their efforts towards a common goal.
As highlighted in my book Focus-5, (download for free by clicking the link Focus 5(Free Download) – success coach ram) leadership is closely connected with followership. People choose to follow leaders whom they trust and whom they believe can help them achieve their goals.
Over the years, I have had the opportunity to work with and learn from several leaders. Their behaviours and leadership practices have shaped many of my own lessons about effective leadership.
Here are five lessons that continue to stand out.
1. Adaptability: See Change as an Opportunity: Change is inevitable. Effective leaders do not resist change; they look at it as an opportunity to improve and move forward. A leader who adapts quickly helps the team navigate uncertainty with confidence.
2. Decisiveness: Make Timely Decisions: Leadership requires decisions. Great leaders gather the available information, assess the situation, and make timely decisions rather than allowing uncertainty to slow the team down. Indecision can be more damaging than an imperfect decision that is corrected quickly.
3. Knowledge: Build Credibility Through Expertise: A leader does not need to know everything, but must develop sufficient knowledge to understand the business, the environment, and the challenges faced by the team. Knowledge builds credibility. Credibility builds trust.
4. Clarity: Set the Vision and Expectations: Effective leaders communicate clearly. They establish a clear vision and goals, explain what is expected, and ensure that the team understands its role in achieving those objectives. People perform better when they know where they are going and what is expected of them.
5. Trust: Develop People and Enable Them to Succeed: Leadership cannot be sustained without trust and followership. Good leaders delegate responsibility, encourage people to take ownership, guide them when needed, and appreciate the team when the assignment is successfully completed. Leadership is not about doing everything yourself. It is about creating an environment where others can succeed.
The Leadership Lesson: The most powerful leadership lessons are often learned not from leadership theories, but from observing leaders in action. Leadership is a continuous journey of learning, adapting, deciding, communicating, trusting, and developing others.
Before you ask, “Am I a good leader?”, ask yourself, “Are people becoming better because I lead them?”
That question can change the way we think about leadership.
