Starting new habits often feels like a mountain to climb—but it doesn’t have to be. The truth is that habits don’t fail because we lack willpower; they fail because we make them too complicated. The secret? Keep it simple.
Think about it. We scroll social media or snack mindlessly because it’s easy. But when it comes to working out, reading, or learning something new, it feels heavy. That’s why the path to lasting habits lies in making good choices easy and bad choices harder.
1. Reduce Friction
Friction is nothing more than the little obstacles that get in our way. Remove them, and you make good habits stick.
- Want to eat healthy? Keep fruit and nuts ready to grab.
On the flip side, increase friction for bad habits. If TV is your weakness, unplug it or hide the remote. That extra step can be enough to break the cycle.
2. Apply the Two-Minute Rule
James Clear calls this the magic of starting small: if it takes two minutes or less, do it.
- Want to read more? Start with two pages before bed.
- Want to run a marathon? First, just put on your running shoes each day.
The beauty of this rule is that it gets you past the hardest part—starting. Tiny wins lead to momentum, and momentum leads to transformation.
3. Shape Your Environment
Our surroundings quietly guide our behaviour. Want to exercise? Keep your workout gear visible. Want to write? Keep a notebook on your desk. Make your environment a silent ally that nudges you toward your goals.
4. Track Your Progress
What gets measured gets improved. Mark a calendar, use an app, or keep a notebook. Seeing your streak grow fuels your motivation and reinforces your identity as someone who follows through.
5. Consistency Over Intensity
Habits are not built in a day, but they are built by daily action. Consistency beats intensity every time. Even two minutes a day, repeated, creates a ripple effect that compounds into powerful results over months and years.
Mindset Shift
Building habits isn’t about discipline or willpower alone—it’s about design. Design your habits to be simple, friction-free, and repeatable. Small steps, taken consistently, lead to extraordinary results.
So, don’t wait for the “perfect day” to begin. Start today, with one small step. Remember: transformation is not about giant leaps, but about tiny actions repeated over time.
