When Your Career Needs a Turn: Lessons from Two Indian Spinners

Lessons from Two Indian Spinners

Sometimes, the most powerful career lessons are not found in management books or leadership seminars. They are found on a cricket field. Two recent performances by Indian spinners caught my attention.

Manav Suthar produced an extraordinary spell for Warwickshire against Glamorgan, taking three wickets in just 15 balls without conceding a single run. The performance equalled a rare first-class record that had stood since 1895.

And then there was Kuldeep Yadav.

Against Essex, one delivery appeared to be heading away from the batter, only to turn sharply back and crash into the stumps. The batter had misread the trajectory completely.

Watching these two moments made me think about mid-career professionals. Your career can sometimes feel like that delivery from Kuldeep. You think you know where it is going.

Then suddenly, it turns. The question is not whether your career will change. The question is whether you are prepared to turn with it.

1. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Consistency

Manav Suthar’s remarkable 15-ball spell did not happen in isolation. His recent performances for India and Warwickshire reflect sustained preparation and execution.

Mid-career success is rarely created by one spectacular moment.

It is built through hundreds of consistent actions that nobody notices.

Keep learning. Keep improving. Keep delivering.

Your breakthrough may come from the consistency you have been building for years.

2. Your Experience Is Your Greatest Asset — If You Keep Sharpening It

At mid-career, you have something younger professionals are still building experience.

But experience alone is not enough. Like a spinner who continuously works on flight, turn, accuracy and variation, professionals must continuously sharpen their skills.

Experience becomes an advantage only when it continues to evolve.

3. Learn to Read the Situation, Not Just Follow the Pattern

Kuldeep’s delivery worked because the batter read the initial trajectory and expected the ball to continue in that direction. But it turned. Careers can do the same.

Industry expectations change. Technology changes. Roles change. Organisations change.

What worked brilliantly five years ago may not work equally well today.

Don’t become so comfortable with yesterday’s success that you fail to read today’s signals.

4. Your Turning Point May Be Closer Than You Think

A ball can change direction in a fraction of a second. A career can change direction through one conversation, one project, one new skill, one mentor, or one courageous decision. The challenge is that we often wait for the perfect opportunity.

Sometimes, you don’t need a completely new career. You need a new direction within your existing career.

5. Create Your Own “Unplayable Delivery”

Great professionals develop something distinctive.

A capability.
A way of thinking.
A leadership quality.
A problem-solving approach.
A reputation for delivering results.

Something that makes people say:

“When this challenge comes, we need this person.”

That is your professional differentiation. Don’t try to become another Kuldeep Yadav or Manav Suthar.

Discover what makes your own professional delivery difficult to ignore.

The Mid-Career Lesson

Manav Suthar reminds us about precision and consistency.

Kuldeep Yadav reminds us about variation, surprise and the ability to challenge expectations.

Together, they offer a powerful message for anyone in the middle of their career:

Don’t simply keep bowling the same delivery because it worked yesterday.

Keep learning.

Keep adapting.

Keep sharpening your strengths.

Keep surprising yourself.

Because sometimes, the biggest breakthrough in your career comes when you are willing to change the way you deliver what you already know.

A question to reflect on:

If your career were a cricket ball today, would it be travelling exactly as expected — or would you have developed enough skill to create your own turn?

If you are looking to Re-discover, Accelerate and Maximise your career growth, I’d be happy to support you.
