Recently, someone reached out to me after reading my article “People Don’t Get Stuck Because They Lack Talent.” (14) People Don’t Get Stuck Because They Lack Talent. | LinkedIn
He said:
- “I am unable to choose a career path.”
- “I can’t find a job I love.”
- “I need to develop a strong growth mindset.”
And beneath all that… there was something deeper.
Doubt-Uncertainty-A silent fear that maybe he had reached the end of the road.
Let me tell you something powerful — this is not his story alone. This is the silent chapter many professionals go through. I went through it in my mid-career. Many of you reading this may have crossed it. Some are living it right now. And some will face it in the future.
The Hidden Emotional Cycle
It usually begins like this:
You prepare hard.
You give interviews.
You perform well.
And then you hear:
“You are not selected or on waitlist. If the first-person declines, you may stand a chance.”
At first, you remain hopeful. But when it repeats…
A new internal dialogue begins:
- “Did I reach my limit?”
- “Am I not valuable anymore?”
- “Have I become less marketable?”
- “Is my age a disadvantage?”
- “Maybe I am not good enough.”
And here is where the real battle begins.
Not outside. Inside.
Because when these thoughts are repeated, they don’t just remain thoughts. They get registered into the subconscious mind. Slowly, they start shaping your self-belief. And once belief shifts, behaviour follows. This is where many capable professionals quietly lose momentum.
But this is also where transformation can begin.
The T-BAR-F Shift: A Framework for Inner Reset
Over the years, what helped me navigate my own uncertainty was a simple yet powerful model:
T-B-A-R-F Thoughts – Beliefs – Actions – Results – Feedback
Let’s unpack this in the context of career confusion and rejection.
1. Thoughts → The Starting Point
Every result begins with a thought.
If the dominant thought becomes:
“I am not getting selected. Something is wrong with me.”
That thought begins to gain emotional strength.
But what if the thought shifts to:
“I am improving. Every interview is sharpening my positioning.”
Same situation. Different internal story.
Your thoughts are not facts. They are interpretations. And interpretations can be redesigned.
2. Beliefs → The Invisible Decision
Repeated thoughts become beliefs.
If rejection repeats, you may unconsciously conclude:
“I am not marketable.”
But what if the belief becomes:
“The market has changed. I need to reposition my value.”
One belief makes you shrink. The other makes you evolve.
Beliefs are powerful because they operate silently. Most people don’t fail because of lack of talent. They slow down because of a limiting internal belief.
3. Actions → The Visible Expression
Beliefs drive action.
If you believe you are “second best,” you will show up cautiously in interviews.
If you believe you are “value in progress,” you will show up with curiosity, energy and conviction.
Your body language changes. Your tone changes. Your confidence changes.
And interviewers sense that immediately. Your action is a mirror of your belief.
4. Results → The Outcome Layer
Results are not random.
They are consequences of aligned (or misaligned) thoughts, beliefs and actions.
Sometimes the result may still not go in your favour — and that’s okay.
Because the real transformation happens in the next step.
5. Feedback → The Growth Lever
Most people treat feedback emotionally. Leaders treat feedback strategically.
Instead of asking:
“Why did I fail?”
Ask:
“What skill gap do I need to close?”
“How can I sharpen my positioning?”
“What problem does the market truly want solved?”
Feedback is not rejection. It is redirection.
Career Confusion Is Not Weakness — It Is Evolution
When someone says, “I don’t know which career path to choose,” I don’t see confusion.
I see awareness. Because blindly continuing in the wrong direction is more dangerous than pausing to reflect.
If you are unable to find a job you love, ask:
- Do I love the job — or do I love the growth it gives?
- Am I chasing passion — or building competence?
- Have I clearly articulated my micro-specialisation?
- What unique problem do I solve better than others?
Clarity doesn’t come from overthinking. It comes from structured experimentation.
The Real Mindset Shift
Growth mindset is not a motivational slogan. It is the disciplined practice of redesigning your internal T-BAR-F cycle.
You cannot control every interviewer.
You cannot control market cycles.
You cannot control competition.
But you can absolutely control:
- Your dominant thoughts
- Your chosen beliefs
- Your deliberate actions
- Your learning from feedback
And when this internal system aligns, results begin to compound.
If You Are in That Phase Right Now…
Let me say this clearly:
You are not behind. You are not outdated. You are not finished. You are being refined.
The road feels uncertain not because it has ended — but because a stronger version of you is being formed.
Sometimes, life pauses you not to reject you, but to rebuild you.
And when you rebuild with awareness, you don’t just get a job.
You elevate your identity.
The question is not:
“Why am I not getting selected?”
The real question is:
“Who must I become to make selection inevitable?”
Reflect. Reset. Reposition.
Your next breakthrough may not require new talent. It may require a new belief.
